I couldn't agree more on the basics Amber. I myself prefer the simpler to the more modern. In the above review we were dining with friends, so that influenced our menu choices.

My favourite SLC place for sushi is Kyoto. Everything they do has a fantastically simple elegance to it - I even think they make their own miso, but don't quite me on that!

I personally think Naked Fish is fantastic. Mikado's never impressed me in the past, they had a massive array of what I would call 'designer sushi,' which are deep-fried, excessively sweetened and well, just excessive everything--sushi made to attract those who are turned off by the idea of 'raw' fish.

I grew up in Japan so I typically judge the quality of the Japanese restaurant by the basics like white rice, sashimi, miso soup and agedashi-tofu. Although Naked Fish does have a good selection of designer rolls similar to Mikado's, their 15-piece Sashimi platter reminded me of something my father ate everyday at the dinner table. The fish were sliced thin and delicately like in Japan, garnished individually with what best suited the fish.

I also appreciated the shiso swanky roll, which had a very crisp texture and flavor without requiring the act of deep-frying, which in my opinion is a rather demoralizing for the art of sushi lol.

Either way I give thumbs up to Naked Fish!

I had lunch with some friends at the Naked Fish a few weeks ago. Between the atmosphere, the service, and the food, it was one of the best lunches I've had in a long time.

I have eaten at Takashi and Naked fish recently. I always like to sit at the bar and have the food prepared that way. Takashi's bar is often crowded and you feel smooshed. We came early to Naked Fish and it was much easier to find a seat and watch the chef go to work. If you have a big party and cannot do the bar situp then i would rate either equally good based on getting a reservation. At Naked Fish i did the Omikase (chef's choice) and the awesome creations started rolling our way. A good way to try a new place- but i like being at the bar to converse directly with whom is creating it. At Naked Fish don't miss the Kobe beef skewers... (not sashimi- cooked) AWESOME...!

So how does naked fish compare with Takashi? Visiting Salt Lake this month and only have time for one dinner. Which would you suggest?
