African Market and Restaurant
1878 S. Redwood Rd
(801) 978-9673

Review: City Weekly review

Ted Scheffler eats from a menu “filled with exotic sounding dishes like ashaakiltii, misira, shiro, handaanqoo, waaddii and raafuu”. The cuisine in question is African served up at the African Market and Restaurant. Certainly not something I have ever tried myself. Feel like your stuck in a dining rut, eating at the same old places all the time? If you are looking for something a tad more interesting the next time you dine out, this could be the one for you.

Little America Coffee Shop
500 South Main Street – Salt Lake City , 84101
801-596-5700

Review: Deseret Morning News review
Website: http://www.littleamerica.com

Over in the Deseret Morning News Stacey Kratz revisits days of old with a meal at the Little America Hotel’s coffee shop. Older menu items such as the classic prawn cocktail are paired with items such as quesadillas for a more modern feel. The restaurant ticks all the right boxes for Stacey evoking memories of the past.

Greek Souvlaki
404 E. 300 South, Salt Lake City; 801-322-2062
2192 W. 3500 South, West Valley City, 801-973-4976
5692 S. 900 East, Murray, 801-266-3336

Review: Salt Lake Tribune review

Vanessa Chang drops by one of her favourite hang outs in Greek Souvlaki, 36 years young and still going strong with three locations. Vanessa tips her hat to the Gyro’s mainly, but also gives a lesser nod to the souvlaki.

Les Madeleines
216 E. 500 South, Salt Lake City
801-355-2294

Review: In Utah This Week review
Website: http://les-madeleines.com/

The hugely popular Les Madeleines sees a visit from In Utah This Week’s William Hampton, looking to satisfy his lunch cravings. There’s not much more to be said about this place, already mentioned extensively in local press and on national television. The baked goods are the star, but William touches on some of the items you might want to grab for lunch too (wraps, salads etc).

Pat’s BBQ
155 W. Commonwealth Ave. (2125 South), Salt Lake City, Utah

Spark Restaurant Lounge
86 N University Ave, Provo, UT, 84601
(801) 701-6780

Review: Your Heart Out Review
Website: Facebook profile

Two reviews from Your Heart Out this week. First up, ‘dude food’ chows down at the ever tasty Pat’s BBQ. Another resounding thumbs up from Danny Kourianos, on what many attest to being SLC’s best BBQ food. The other review is from Courtney Buell, who checks out Spark Restaurant Lounge in Provo. Courtney reckons this place “serves up hip, gourmet eats and sophisticated atmosphere unlike anyone in Utah Valley.”

Salt Lake Pizza and Pasta
1061 E 2100 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84106

Review: Salt Lake City Food blog review
Website: http://www.fiddlerselbowslc.com/

Last up is Krista Smith’s review of Salt Lake Pizza & Pasta. The restaurant serves as the family friendly side eatery to the more raucous Fiddlers Elbow. As it shares the same kitchen as Fiddlers, expect big portions and generally pocket friendly prices. Krista enjoys her meal here, I’ve always enjoyed Fiddlers too, never stopped by this side of the operation though; I always seem to be swayed by the big screen TV’s for the big game…

African Restaurant is fantastic. The only problem is that it’s always empty because nobody seems to know about it. I’m so pleased to see an article about it in the City Weekly as they really deserve the business.

It is quite hard for the more esoteric places to get the traction they need, seen it with a few restaurants.

I’ve never been to this restaurant (well not yet!) but wish them all the luck in the world, as I do for all independent local places!
